Make a picture that hides
until someone taps it

You post an image. In the feed it looks like almost nothing. Someone taps it — and the real picture is there.

Open your picture

Tap Open image and pick any photo or artwork from your device. That's the picture that will hide and come back.

Use a big picture. At least 1500 pixels wide. Small pictures don't work — you'll see why in step 3.

Choose what stays visibleoptional

By default the whole picture hides. That's the simplest version, and it looks great. If that's what you want, skip straight to step 3.

But sometimes you want one thing to stay sharp in the feed — a piece of clothing, a logo, a "tap me" label. That's the front layer.

Paint itTap ✎ Cut from base, then paint over what should stay visible. The blue area is what stays.
Or drop in a pictureTap ⇪ Upload overlay and pick a PNG with a transparent background. Its shape becomes the front layer automatically.
Or nothing at allLeave it empty. The whole picture hides.

The little line underneath always tells you the split — like front layer covers ~18% — the other 82% hides.

Export at 2048

In the Export section, set Width to 2048. Then tap Export PNG-8. The file lands in your downloads.

This is the step everyone gets wrong. The trick only works because the feed shrinks your picture down — that shrinking is what makes the hidden part blend into the background. A small picture doesn't get shrunk, so you just see dots and it looks broken. Big picture = clean effect.

Post it on X

Attach the file you just exported and post it. Add a caption telling people to tap — the whole point is that they can't tell by looking.

Don't send the file through WhatsApp, Telegram or Instagram as a "photo." Those apps re-compress it and the effect dies. Send it as a file / document, or download it directly on the device you're posting from.

Try it on a second account first, and look at it in the feed before posting for real.

If something looks wrong

I can still see the hidden picture in the feed

Almost always the picture was too small. Go back and export at 2048 wide.

Second thing to check: the person looking. This works best for people using X in dark mode — which is most people. On the white theme it hides less well. That's how the technique works, not a fault in your file.

It looks like dots or stripes, not a picture

Same cause — the picture is too small, so the pattern shows instead of blending. Export bigger.

It can also happen if the file passed through a messaging app on the way to your phone. Move it as a file, not as a photo.

Do I have to add a front layer?

No. Leave it empty and the whole picture hides — that's the simplest and often the nicest result. The front layer is only for when you want something to stay visible on purpose.

The two preview panels look identical

Press and hold the preview — it switches to what a tap would show, then goes back when you let go. If they still look the same, you probably haven't set a front layer and are comparing at the same size; the difference comes from the feed shrinking the image.

Where do my pictures go? Is this safe?

Nowhere. Everything happens inside your browser, on your device. There's no account, no upload, no server. You can turn off your wifi after the page loads and it still works.

My export is too big to post

X caps PNG files at 5 MB. Drop the Width to 1600, or set Palette to 128 colours. The app warns you when you're close.
